Faculty of Theology

The Faculty of Theology is composed of the departments of Theology and Religious Science. Applicants to both departments must be first recommended by their religious superiors, pastors, or Bishops in order to be admitted. The Theological Faculty has been established for the following purposes: that the Sacred disciplines and the related sciences may take root in the Chinese cultural context; and that students may be highly trained in the same disciplines and be instructed in the knowledge of sources and in the art of scientific work. Thus, according to the specific end of the Faculty, they will become well trained workers for evangelization. In close union with the Hierarchy, they strive to fully understand and widely diffuse the patrimony of Christian wisdom, and to fittingly initiate dialogue with other religions and with the world of our time. The total student enrollment is about 110.

Since 1999, the Faculty has gradually developed five research centers: The Center for Liturgical Research, the Human Life Ethics Center, the Center for Statistical Research on Religion and Society, the Pastoral Center, and the Research Center for Taiwan Aboriginal. The purpose of these centers is to inculcate Christian theology and society and to raise the quality of research at the Theologate. In addition, from 1999 various Academic Programs for students of religious science have been established. Their purpose is to give participating students not only a solid theological foundation, but also various professional skills that will enable them to better serve the Church; examples of these Academic Programs are the program in pastoral counseling and the program in translation of Church documents.
