Introduction

When the University was re-founded in Taiwan, Sr. Urbania Tushaus established the Department of Domestic Science and Nutrition, which is the first one of its kind in the country, under the former College of Science in 1963 with the support from SVD and SSpS. Over the decades, the College has gradually set up more departments and graduate institutes. The College of Human Ecology currently has five departments all with master's programs: Restaurant, Hotel and Institutional Management, Child and Family Studies, Nutrition and Food Sciences, Textiles and Clothing, and Accessories Design and Retailing, and a graduate program in Museum Studies. There are approximately 2000 students.

Curriculum and Faculty

At present, 90 percent of the faculty hold or work on doctoral degrees. To integrate classroom learning with work-related learning, the College also invites experts from industrial sectors to teach professional courses.

Furthermore, the College promotes scholarly exchange programs for faculty and students with worldwide Catholic universities in order to foster intercultural understanding and an awareness of global issues. The foundation of the College is a commitment to meeting the needs of people and society. The College works closely with the academics and industries. The curriculum is designed to provide a balance between theory and practice. Aside from the training necessary for professional practice, the College also provides students with a firm understanding of cultural, social, natural, and technical principles related to the welfare of men.

Facilities

pointer A Practice Restaurant and a Caf_ for students majoring in Restaurant, Hotel and Institutional

Management to gain practical, hands-on experience in food preparation and table service,

pointer Specialized equipment for teaching and research, including biochemical and chemical instruments for spectroscopy, chromatography, radioisotope analysis, electrophoresis, microscopy, and ultracentrifugation; physical testing equipment; and cameras, videotape, and sound recording
equipment.

Academic Activities

The faculty members of the College are vigorously engaged in both teaching and research activities. The grants awarded to the College from the government and private organizations and Industry-University Cooperation Projects are over 50 million dollars each year. Faculty are often
invited to present their research findings in international conferences and regularly publish their papers in scholarly journals. For graduate students of the College, graduate seminars and graduation exhibitions are regularly given to encourage students' pursuit of academic excellence. Furthermore, each department will organize academic conferences and symposia to foster a dialogue between researchers, practitioners, and those who develop and implement policy.

Educational Goals and Mission

The college is distinctively characterized by its concern for the well-being of the general public and for the environment. The educational goals of the College include: to enhance the quality of teaching and research in Food, Clothing, Child Care, and Entertainment with an emphasis on holistic
education, to contribute to the well-being of individuals, families, and communities, to elevate the quality of everyday life of the people, and to foster professionals, academic researchers, management consultant specialists, and teachers in Human Ecology.

Career Opportunities

Students may pursue graduate studies of relevant fields in Taiwan as well as abroad. Each
department has its network of school, community and continuing education to facilitate the
interaction and communication among teaching staff, students and the extramural community. The
College graduates are known to have outstanding performance in their fields of occupations.
