Introduction

The establishment of the College of Liberal Arts can be traced back to 1922-23. After Ying Lien-chi founded Fu Jen Academy in Beijing, the Benedictine priests received orders from the Vatican and officially set up Fu Jen University. With the reestablishment of the university in Taiwan, the deans of the College of Liberal Arts include Right Reverend Monsignor Niu Rwo Wang, Fr. John J. Wang, Fr. Aloysius Chang, Professor Ho-Sheng Lu, Professor Hsiang-Yang Huang, and Professor Fu-Bing Chen serves as the present dean.

Facilities

The College of Liberal Arts encourages academic research and strives to improve its facilities, teaching faculty and pedagogical approaches.


pointerThe Library of Humanities has a collection of more than 300,000 volumes of books in Chinese and English.


pointerThe Media and Instructional Resources Center provides facilities such as darkrooms, film studios, film editing rooms and radio recording rooms for related departments in the college.

pointerThe Voice of Fu Jen University (VFJU) is a pilot radio station which provides a fieldwork environment for students from departments of Journalism, Advertising and Communication Arts, and Mass Communication.

Academic Activities

To promote academic research, the College implements the Institute of Scholastic Philosophy and the Pre-Chin and Han Dynasty Literature Research Center. In addition to the two affiliate centers, the College hosts various academic activities annually, such as international conferences,

pointergraduate student seminars,

pointergraduate exhibitions for majors in Advertising and Public Relations and Communication Arts,

pointerperformance exhibitions for majors in Physical Education, and

pointerNewspaper Internships for students from the Department of Journalism and Communication Studies to work as writers for a community newspaper Hsinchuang Report and contribute to the online project of Vitality News.

pointerIn addition, students of the Department of Library and Information Science participate in social services by forming assistance teams to offer library service for the devastated areas of the 921 earthquake.

Educational Goals and Mission

Educational Goals and Mission The College puts emphasis on humanities education, striving to inspire students' independent thinking and research ability. The curriculum is designed to lay a professional groundwork for each student and to cultivate the humanities spirit of the students. The College currently has about 110 full-time faculty members, all with particular research strengths. In addition, the College offers interdisciplinary programs such as "Comparative Cultural Studies" and "Ancient Chinese Books Collection and Studies Program," which afford students the opportunity to broaden their learning scope.

Career Opportunities

The College encourages students to prepare for professional careers by taking minor program or double majors, so that they may acquire skills applicable to many career areas. The college graduates may pursue careers in teaching, publishing, media, library, information technology and commerce. If students intend to pursue graduate studies, they may either continue their undergraduate subject or choose another relevant subject in accordance to their interest and future career plan.
