Introduction

The establishment of a College of Medicine at Fu Jen is a long-cherished hope of Cardinal Tien Hospital, and Many other Catholic hospitals in Taiwan. The purpose is to foster medical specialists with catholic spirits. In November 1989, the Ministry of Education granted permission to establish the College of Medicine. The College now comprises five departments: Nursing, Public Health, Clinical Psychology, Occupational Therapy and a School of Medicine.

Curriculum

Fu Jen University was ranked first in fields of Liberal Arts, Law, Management, and Sciences in the evaluation of private universities of Taiwan. The Fu Jen College of Medicine is the first college of medicine in a Taiwanese private university. As a comprehensive university, Fu Jen offers a multidisciplinary environment for teaching and research in medical sciences.

The Department of Nursing is committed to fostering nursing specialists with the qualities of care, concern, and compassion. To enable students to carry out their nursing responsibilities, the Department emphasizes the application of theoretical knowledge and clinical practice, and seeks to improve the health and well being of our citizens through student and faculty service. The Department aims to train professional nurses who practice nursing in an accountable, collaborative, and caring manner in accordance with ethical, legal, and moral standards.

The Department of Public Health seeks to prepare graduates for a professional career in public health. The goal of the undergraduate curriculum strives to give students a thorough training in the fundamentals of public health science. The Department and the student association constantly
participate in public health activities on and off campus, including prevention of epidemic diseases, anti-smoking and anti-drugs campaigns, inspection of restaurants, and promotion of community health.

The former Department of Mental Rehabilitation was renamed the Department of Clinical Psychology in year 2004. The curriculum of the Department is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to work in various professional environments including medical schools and mental health
facilities. The PBL (problem-based learning) approach, one characteristic of the program in Clinical Psychology, is a learner-centered and problem-focused approach, which enhances professional and clinical competence in practice. With the combined resources of the College of Medicine, the Department offers students a systematic learning and ensures that students attain competence in a range of approaches so that they can function professionally in their chosen career paths.

The curriculum of School of Medicine offers students an innovative approach to their medical education and training. The school also features the pedagogy of PBL (problem-based learning). The curriculum emphasizes problem solving, self-directed learning and early clinical experiences and
integrates the basic sciences into clinical cases. The School strives to develop in all students the capacity for leadership in the clinical practice of scientific medicine, and to prepare students for careers in the various branches of basic, clinical and social medicine.

The Department of Occupational Therapy starts recruiting students in year 2004. With the combined resources of humanities, social sciences and information technology of the University, the Department provides its students a holistic learning environment for professional and personal
growth. The mission of the Department is to foster occupational therapy practitioners with holistic development in physical, psychological, and social aspects. The program emphasizes the application of theory and research evidence to clinical practice through rigorous studies in Occupational
Therapy. Furthermore, the Department takes the difference between western society and local Taiwanese community into consideration and provides courses tailored to meet the needs of the local medical environment.
