College of Science and Engineering

College of Science and Engineering

Introduction

The College of Science and Engineering was reestablished in 1963 in Taiwan. It now has one interdisciplinary Ph.D. program: Graduate Institute of Applied Science and Engineering, seven departments: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Life Science, Psychology, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science and Information Engineering, and two independent centers: Biotechnology Research Center and Science and Religion Research Center. There are about 100 full-time faculty members.

Academic Activities

The College has been subsidized by the Ministry of Education to conduct the "Program for Improvement of Basic Science Education", the "VLSI Circuits and Systems Education Program", the "Program for Improvement of Integrated Teaching", and the "Biotechnology Education Program". In
addition, the College received $50 to $70 million annual grants from the National Science Council to participate in the "Program for Enhancing the Research and Development Productivity of Private Universities". Over the last three years, the College has received more than $70 million annually
in external research funding, which is a great help to the College's research and development productivity. Research results by the faculty have also been published in prominent international and local journals. The number of publications increased from 175 papers in year 2000 to 237 papers in year 2003. A total of 235 papers were published in SCI, SSCI, and EI-cited journals over the last five years.

The Department of Mathematics hosted the "International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians" in 2001 and "The Fourth China-Philippine Seminar on Nonlinear Mathematics" commissioned by NSC in 2002. The Department of Chemistry recommended the University to confer honorary doctorates to the Nobel laureate in Medicine John R. Vane and his fellow researcher John C. McGiff. In the past three years, the Department of Life Science hosted the "Conference on Strategies for the Biotech Industry in the Age of Genomics," the "Conference on the Interdisciplinary Studies of Protein Structure and Bioinformatics," and the "Distinguished Alumni's Conference on Biotechnology." The Department of Psychology held the "Conference on the Development of Psychology" to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Department in 2002. The chair of the Department Prof. Liu Zhao-Ming was elected the President of the Chinese Psychological Association and further held the "42nd Annual Conference of Chinese Psychological Association", which was an important event in the academic circle of Psychology. Our alumni, staff, and students have won numerous awards and honors. Among them, Dr. James Yao, the alumnus of the Department of Physics, received the American National Academy of Science Awards. Prof. Chang Chi-Kwong, the alumnus of the Department of Chemistry, won the Michigan State University Distinguished Academic Staff Award, while Prof. Hsia Ling-Ching of the Department of Psychology received the Psych Out Awards from the East Side Institute.

Educational Goals and Mission

The mission of the College of Science and Engineering is to cultivate students who can meet both academic and industrial requirements. Particularly applicable to the College are these goals:

pointerto foster scientific research and realistic approaches,

pointerto elevate research quality and to develop integrated knowledge management,

pointerto integrate ethics into the curriculum in order to develop personal and professional integrity, and

pointerto emphasize holistic education courses in languages and humanities to broaden the learning scope of students.

Career Opportunities

The College encourages its graduates to pursue further studies in Taiwan as well as abroad. Over 60 percent of the graduates are admitted by local graduate schools annually. Since its establishment, the College has more than 12,000 alumni, who enjoy good reputation and make great contribution in their capacities as researchers, educators, and business executives.
